- Biography -  Nederlands  France

Roel Hofman was born in Rotterdam (The Netherlands) on May 14, 1956. At a very young age he got fascinated by drawing and painting and from that time on he has worked consciously and seriously on his technique and style. At the age of sixteen he was apprenticed to the Rotterdam painter Cornelis Witters.
Soon his talent became evident when he started winning prizes for his work. In the eighties he took lessons to further improve his skills and soon the student became a teacher at the Academy for drawing and painting in Spijkenisse.
In the nineties Roel started an art gallery with an art library. From that time on art has dominated his life. Several times a year he returns to the countryside of France to gain inspiration. In this quiet and peaceful entourage, surrounded by beautiful nature, new paintings and ideas come about.
Although he started with drawing it soon became obvious that he was more partial to painting. During the first few years he mostly painted in the traditional, classical style. After this period he changed to magical realism and surrealism. Gradually he developed his own unique style which has a very distinctive mark.
In his vision the use of colour in a painting is one of the most important elements. It is the first thing to which most people react instinctively. That is why this element stands out most clearly in Roel Hofman’s paintings. The subjects of his paintings are of secondary importance.
Roel wants to affect people unconsciously with colours, evoke pleasant associations and bring pleasure in the lives of people through the effect of his paintings.
From 1997 screen prints from Roel have been published and the screen process is done by Roel Hofman himself.
Nowadays Roel Hofman’s works can be found in national and international private collections, art galleries and companies.
